10 & 20 mph speed limits on most New York streets

You could soon see speed limits as low as 20 or even 10 miles an hour on select streets in New York City, - ABC 7 News reports.

This shift comes as the city gains control over setting its own speed limits, a power previously held by the state. The move, included in the latest state budget through recently introduced legislation, marks a significant victory for advocates of safer streets, who have long championed the passage of "Sammy's Law."

While only a small number of streets will see a reduction to 10 miles per hour, most areas will see their speed limits lowered to 20 miles per hour. However, there's a notable exception to this rule: roads with three lanes or more in a single direction will maintain the current default speed limit of 25 miles per hour.
