A recent surge in pedestrian fatalities in New York City has claimed the lives of a 13-year-old girl and a 66-year-old man, spotlighting a growing crisis, ABC News 7 reports.

Niyell McCrorey, 13, was fatally struck by a car at the intersection of Manhattan Avenue and Cathedral Parkway on October 24. After spending a week in the pediatric ICU, she succumbed to her injuries.

“My daughter Niyell was a brilliant kid. She didn’t trouble anyone. She was a sweetheart,” her father, Darnell Sealy-McCrorey, said. Friends and family gathered at the site on Monday night, lighting candles and leaving tributes in her memory.

“I miss her voice, her presence, her touch, her smell—everything about my granddaughter,” said Alithia Mackins-Wilson, grieving the loss.

Just a few days later, a hit-and-run claimed another life in Harlem. A driver in a Toyota RAV4 struck and killed a 66-year-old man walking along Fifth Avenue near 135th Street on Sunday night, then fled the scene. The man was taken to Harlem Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A similar tragedy unfolded on Saturday night, when a bicyclist was struck and killed by a Toyota minivan that had sped away from a police stop, hitting the cyclist at W. 155th Street and St. Nicholas Avenue.

Such incidents are becoming increasingly common. NYPD data shows that 7,027 pedestrians have been hit by vehicles so far this year, marking a 3.2% increase from the same time last year, when 6,811 incidents were recorded.

The McCrorey family hopes their heartbreak will inspire drivers to exercise caution. "Be mindful of your speed when driving," Sealy-McCrorey urged. "My daughter was brain-dead for seven days. She fought and lost her life from a traumatic injury."

Niyell now joins a tragic statistic: over 200 pedestrians have died in New York City this year alone. According to Transportation Alternatives, "New York is failing its citizens."
