A basement fire in Queens on Thursday claimed the life of one person and left several others, including a firefighter, injured, according to officials, as reported by ABC News 7.

Firefighters arrived at 94-14 132nd Street in Richmond Hill, located between 95th Avenue and Atlantic Avenue, shortly after 5 p.m. Twelve units, comprising 60 firefighters and EMS personnel, responded to the fire, which originated in the basement.

Witnesses described the harrowing scene as medics tried to save a 72-year-old man pulled from the burning building. "He was severely burned, almost 80% of his body," one neighbor recounted.

The victim was transported to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center in critical condition but was later pronounced dead. Neighbors described him as a quiet man who was often seen in the neighborhood.

Several people live in the building, including a young woman in a wheelchair who managed to escape unharmed. One firefighter was injured, and multiple civilians were injured in the fire as well.

Authorities are now investigating what may have caused the fire to spread so intensely.
