A 79-year-old man was shot and killed by police during a confrontation outside a Queens precinct on Tuesday night, ABC News 7 informs.

The incident occurred around 6:40 p.m. in front of the 111th Precinct station house on Northern Boulevard and 215th Street in Bayside.

According to NYPD officials, the man exited his vehicle and approached the station, where an officer engaged him in conversation. Moments later, the suspect pulled out a loaded gun and pointed it at the officer. Despite multiple commands to drop the weapon and calls for backup, the man refused to comply.

When additional officers arrived and also ordered him to disarm, he continued to point his weapon. In response, four officers fired, striking him multiple times.

Officers immediately administered CPR before EMS transported him to NewYork-Presbyterian, where he was pronounced dead.

Police recovered a loaded Cobra .38 Special firearm at the scene. The man’s identity has not been released, but authorities confirmed he had recently been reported missing in Nassau County, where his family expressed concerns about his mental decline.

The encounter was captured on police body cameras and precinct security footage, and an investigation is underway.

During a briefing Tuesday night, NYPD Assistant Chief Brian Hennessy highlighted that this was the second armed confrontation officers faced in less than 12 hours. Earlier that day, an NYPD detective was shot in the arm while executing a warrant on the Lower East Side.
