A harrowing video was released by the NYPD officers responding to a severe apartment fire in Queens.

Alerted by a bystander, the officers jumped into action without waiting for backup or donning protective gear, ABC News7 reports.

Officers tried kicking down the apartment door at the building on 95th Street and 37th Avenue on July 19 and were met by heavy smoke. The door was blocked by bicycles, trapping a woman inside.

Police locked arms as they entered the apartment, trying to see through the smoke.  They found the resident and escorted her to safety, warning others in the building of the danger until firefighters arrived.

The officers received the call just before 11 p.m. while on nearby patrol, thanks to a bystander who flagged them down. Without hesitation, they raced down the block and up several flights of stairs towards the fire, their body cameras capturing the tense moments.

Following a trail of water from the sprinklers, they reached the apartment and one officer used a fire extinguisher to douse the flames in the living room.

Officer Devonte Morris of the NYPD said, “My heart was beating, knew had to do something. When the door first opened there was heat and water just coming out, that's how we knew we had to go inside"

The woman, who refused medical attention, was later able to return to her apartment. Six of the eight responding officers were treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire's cause is still under investigation but is not considered suspicious.
