The project to overhaul the triple-cantilever portion of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway has been delayed  by City Council on Wednesday once again, - Spectrum News NY1 writes.

The transportation officials revealed work won’t start until at least 2028 on the section of highway from Sands Street to Atlantic Avenue.

During testimony at a City Council session on Wednesday, transportation authorities disclosed that the project won't commence until at least 2028, addressing the stretch of highway from Sands Street to Atlantic Avenue.

Earlier this year, the Federal Department of Transportation declined the city's plea for $800 million to renovate the over 70-year-old highway section, which is at risk of collapsing.

While council members express apprehension, Ydanis Rodríguez, Commissioner of the city Department of Transportation, emphasizes the necessity for more time.

"In our ongoing process, last year we conducted extensive community engagement. We're collaborating with various teams, including state and federal entities. This summer, we're revisiting the community," Rodríguez stated. "My concerns regarding the BQE, particularly the cantilever, are significant. Our committee has dedicated nearly three years to this issue."

Initially, the Adams administration proposed expanding the number of lanes in each direction, but opposition from local residents and environmental organizations thwarted this plan.
