Firefighters have successfully contained a wildfire that broke out in Brooklyn's Prospect Park on Friday evening, ABC News7 informs.

At a press conference, officials noted that fire crews would remain stationed in the park overnight as a precaution in case of re-ignition.

A passerby reported the fire around 6:40 p.m., according to FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker. The blaze expanded to cover roughly two acres in a dense, hard-to-access section of the park.

Fire Deputy Chief Joseph Duggan explained that dry vegetation and strong winds intensified the fire, which required the response of over 120 firefighters. Four engine companies remained on site overnight to monitor for lingering hot spots.

Late Friday night, some hotspots persisted, but officials confirmed the fire was under control. This incident was one of several brush fires reported across New York City, according to NYC Emergency Management Commissioner Zachary Iscol.

Another brush fire occurred along the Major Deegan Expressway in the Bronx’s Highbridge neighborhood late Friday, while a Red Flag Warning remained active through Saturday. Iscol added that multiple wildfires in New Jersey were also affecting air quality in the city.

“This is the new normal of extreme weather,” Iscol said. “It’s something we should be prepared for.”

New York City Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue highlighted the importance of Prospect Park’s forest, describing it as Brooklyn’s oldest standing forest and critical to the urban ecosystem.

The fire’s cause is still under investigation, according to Commissioner Tucker.
