Plumes of smoke filled the night sky after a massive fire broke out on a barge in Queens overnight, ABC News 7 reports.

The blaze erupted on the barge floating in the East River around 9:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

Officials managed to extinguish the flames at the Sims Metal Facility in just under two hours. Video footage captured the intensity of the fire, which appeared as a large ball of flames with thick smoke billowing into the air.

A significant amount of recycled metal on the barge reportedly caught fire. Workers quickly responded, using an excavator in an attempt to smother the flames.

Smoke from the burning barge was visible from a considerable distance, spreading over densely populated neighborhoods in Long Island City and Sunnyside, Queens, with reports of smoke also reaching Brooklyn.

Although the stubborn fire was initially knocked down, it flared up again hours later before finally being brought under control.

The cause of the fire remains unknown, and no injuries have been reported.
