Abed Abed was charged with several misdemeanors, including aggravated unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle in the third degree—a situation the victim's family believes needs reform, Channel 12 Brooklyn informs.
 

The family of 82-year-old Efrain Barreto, joined by state Sen. Iwen Chu, is advocating for the enactment of "Efrain's Law," which would increase penalties for drivers who injure or kill pedestrians. Barreto was fatally struck by 30-year-old Abed Abed, who, according to prosecutors, was driving without a license when he hit Barreto as he entered the crosswalk at 60th Street and Fifth Avenue in Sunset Park.
 

“They had no right. There needs to be a stiffer penalty—if you commit a crime, kill someone, or hurt someone, you’ve got to go to jail because a misdemeanor doesn’t count,” said Efrain's daughter, Vivian Barreto.
 

The family is also urging the Brooklyn District Attorney's Office to upgrade the charges against Abed to a felony.
