Tragedy struck Queens early Sunday morning when a massive fire broke out in an apartment building, killing three people and injuring several others, according to FDNY

The fire engulfed a house on Chevy Chase Street, located between Cambridge Road and Henley Road in Jamaica Estates, shortly after 1:30 a.m.

According to FDNY Chief John Esposito firefighters who arrived at the scene saw flames shooting out of the ground-floor windows, which quickly spread to the upper floor and the attic.

Authorities reported that the fire was taken under control shortly after 3 a.m. According to the FDNY, more than 100 firefighters and ambulance personnel were working at the scene. An investigation is currently underway into the causes of the fire.

Inspectors from the New York City Department of Buildings  issued an order for the complete evacuation of the building as its exterior structure was significantly damaged by the fire. The building was occupied by around 15 people including the owner.

During the press conference, FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker emphasized the importance of having and maintaining smoke detectors in every home.

"Smoke detectors save lives. You must have a working smoke detector in your house. There's no evidence to us at this time that there's a working smoke detector in this house, and there's a lot of evidence of extension cords and other carelessness," he said.

The American Red Cross is providing emergency care to eight adults, providing them with basic necessities such as snacks, water, and toiletries.
