A townhouse fire in Flushing, Queens, that injured four people, including a firefighter, was caused by a lithium-ion battery, according to FDNY fire marshals, ABC News 7 informs.

The fire broke out just before 5:30 a.m. Friday on 60th Avenue near 146th Street. Freezing temperatures complicated firefighting efforts, with frozen hydrants forcing crews to run water lines from neighboring blocks.

"When the first companies arrived, there was heavy fire coming from the first floor," said Chief Christopher Paolicelli, Division 14, FDNY. "The hydrant in front of the building was frozen, so they had to locate another one further up the road. This caused a delay, but the engine's booster tank provided water until a working hydrant was secured. Engine 273 managed to extinguish a significant amount of fire on the first floor."

Two neighbors suffered serious smoke inhalation, while a third slipped and fell during the evacuation. A firefighter also sustained injuries. All are expected to recover.

"Ladder Company 129 rescued two victims from the rear of the building who were suffering from smoke inhalation," Chief Paolicelli added. "After extinguishing the flames, crews discovered multiple e-bikes and lithium-ion batteries that had been on fire."

At least six e-bikes, along with parts and tools, were found in the basement, suggesting a possible e-bike repair operation. Nearly two dozen lithium-ion batteries were removed from the site and placed on the driveway, alongside charred and melted e-bikes.

FDNY fire marshals confirmed the fire originated from a lithium-ion battery.

The Red Cross is assisting displaced residents.
