Firefighters faced a challenging battle against early morning flames at a Brooklyn home, with sub-freezing temperatures adding to the difficulty, ABC News 7 reports.

The fire broke out on East 38th Street in the East Flatbush neighborhood just before 1 a.m. At least five residents managed to escape safely, but they were treated for minor injuries.

The FDNY encountered significant hurdles due to frozen hydrants and rapidly forming ice. "I believe there were two frozen hydrants on this block so the water they brought in had to come from the next intersection. It took a little time and any chance we had to get ahead of the fire, we lost it right there," FDNY Deputy Chief James Carney said.

Once firefighters established a water source, the frigid temperatures turned the water into ice, coating the scene and complicating the operation further.

Neighboring homes were evacuated as firefighters worked for hours in the bitter cold to contain the blaze. Officials believe the fire originated in the attic before spreading throughout the house, though the cause remains under investigation.

At least 13 people were displaced and are receiving emergency assistance from the Red Cross. Meanwhile, sanitation crews arrived to salt the icy streets, which had turned dangerously slick from the water used to fight the fire.
