A high school football coach from New Jersey was among six individuals tragically killed in a fiery crash in Newark, ABC News 7 reports.

According to the Essex County Prosecutor's Office, the vehicle was heading toward the Route 1 and 9 southbound on-ramp in Newark late Friday night when it veered off the road, became airborne, and struck a support column for the Pulaski Skyway. The car then fell from the ramp and burst into flames, killing all six occupants.

Among the victims were Darryl McKnight, 33, who had recently started a job with the state, and Lamar McKnight, 32, the head football coach at Hudson Catholic Regional High School.

Rutgers University Head Football Coach Greg Schiano shared his condolences on social media.

Family members of the victims visited the crash site at Raymond Boulevard and Blanchard Street on Saturday. The scene was marked by debris from the vehicle and charred gravel. Natasha, the mother of Darryl and Lamar, described how she grew concerned after noticing unusual activity on her sons’ iPhone location.

“I check my kids' location all day, every day. Those two never turn it off,” she said. “When I saw their phones were in the same place for hours, I started to worry.”

When Natasha arrived, she discovered that the burnt vehicle was Lamar's car. Now, she faces the devastating reality of life without her two eldest sons. “I have to be strong,” she said. “I have eight little ones, 17 and under, at home who need me.”

Due to the severity of the fire, the Medical Examiner and police are working to identify the victims using dental records. Authorities have not yet confirmed the identities of the other passengers in the vehicle.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is expected to release more information on Monday.
