One person has died, and two others were injured after a fire broke out in a Brooklyn apartment building, ABC News 7 reports.

Flames erupted from the four-story building on 80th Street in Bay Ridge shortly after 3:30 a.m. on Sunday.

A student who was awake working on an assignment managed to escape with her roommate.

"The smoke was literally coming from underneath the floor, and then we were both like, 'We have to get out,'" said Diksha Bagade.

As they fled, they saw emergency responders carrying a man, a woman, and a child from the apartment below. The 37-year-old man did not survive.

"When we were moving into the apartment, they were really nice and sweet, like 'If you need something, please let us know.' It's sad now to think about what happened to them," Bagade said.

Fire officials reported that cars were parked too close to the two nearest fire hydrants, delaying firefighters' access to water at a critical moment when victims inside needed help.

FDNY Commissioner Robert Tucker urged New Yorkers to park at least 15 feet away from hydrants. "Seconds count, and when your car is on a hydrant and a fire engine shows up, we need to get to that hydrant immediately," Tucker emphasized.

While firefighters were ultimately able to access the hydrants, the illegally parked cars caused delays. Officials cannot determine whether faster access could have saved the victim’s life.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s identity. The woman and two-year-old child are recovering from non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
