A police-involved shooting in Brooklyn has left a 50-year-old man in critical condition, ABC News 7 reports.

The incident occurred around 9:45 p.m. Friday in the Canarsie neighborhood, near East 80th Street and Flatlands Avenue.

According to authorities, officers were responding to reports of gunfire in the area. While in an unmarked vehicle, they observed a man exiting a convenience store.

The man reportedly noticed the officers and fled on foot. At least two officers pursued him on foot, while others followed in a police cruiser.

Police stated that the man hid behind a tree, then turned and pointed a firearm at a police sergeant.

"The officers verbally identified themselves and gave the male numerous verbal commands, to which he did not comply," NYPD Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera explained during a news conference.

Four officers discharged their weapons, striking the man in the abdomen. He was transported to Brookdale Hospital for treatment.

At the scene, police recovered two firearms, including a ghost gun, which was found inside the convenience store.
