A tragic shooting occurred in Brooklyn on Tuesday evening, resulting in the death of a 28-year-old man, according to NYPD.

The NYPD said the incident occurred during an operation to search for stolen cars in the East New York area, near Bay Eighth Street and Belt Parkway.

According to the investigation, the man was driving a stolen Porsche when he was spotted by the New York Police Department's rapid response team.

Suspecting something was wrong, the officers checked the license plates of the car and tried to stop it. However, the driver ignored the order and tried to escape, heading east along Belt Parkway.

The police decided not to pursue the car, but instead set up roadblocks at the exits from the highway.

When trying to stop the Porsche, the driver turned off the road onto a service road, moving in the direction of the officers and the established checkpoint.

As a result, there was a shootout and the man was fatally wounded.

The NYPD reports that an officer who was nearly hit by a car fired once, hitting the driver.

The car then drove onto another exit ramp before crashing into a company car. The driver was pulled out of the car and taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he later died.

At least one passenger in the stolen car was taken into police custody, but no charges have been filed against this man.

Police say the 28-year-old driver was on federal probation for carjacking in Pennsylvania.

The NYPD continues to investigate the circumstances of the incident. Police say the officer who shot the suspect is fine.
