Residents reported that the smell of smoke woke them up, forcing them to evacuate using the fire escape, Channel 12 Brooklyn informs.

The NYPD confirmed that one person died after a fire tore through an apartment building at 2334 Washington Ave. early Saturday morning. Some residents in the Belmont area said their fire alarms never sounded during the incident.

According to the FDNY, the fire erupted on the second floor around 2:30 a.m. Seven others sustained minor injuries. One of the injured, who chose to remain anonymous, shared her distress with News 12: “I still can’t sleep at night. When I hear sirens from fire trucks, I get so anxious.”

City records show there are no documented violations or complaints related to the building’s emergency response system. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

During Fire Prevention Week, the Red Cross is urging New Yorkers to check their smoke detectors and develop a fire evacuation plan for their homes.
