A man has been arrested for allegedly killing his roommate and attempting to dispose of the body by tossing it into the East River inside a suitcase, ABC News 7 informs.

The remains of 65-year-old Edwin Echevarria were found floating in a suitcase in the East River last Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities identified and brought in 23-year-old Christian Millet for questioning. During the investigation, Millet allegedly made incriminating statements, suggesting the crime stemmed from an ongoing dispute.

According to officials, the confrontation began as a verbal argument over food, which escalated into violence. Millet allegedly knocked Echevarria to the ground, stomped on his head, stabbed him 12 to 13 times, and dismembered him in a bathtub.

When discovered, the suitcase contained a torso zipped inside a sleeping bag, which had been stuffed into the suitcase.

The arrest came after missing person posters featuring Echevarria’s name and photo began appearing throughout the Lower East Side neighborhood.

Neighbors reported seeing Millet in the building and said Echevarria referred to him as his grandson.

"It's shocking," one neighbor said. "How can you let someone stay in your home, and they just take your life as if it’s nothing? And then you sit there and tell the cops, 'Oh, I don’t know where he’s at.'"

Family members revealed that Millet is the son of Echevarria’s longtime partner and had been living in Echevarria’s home.

Echevarria’s nephew, Eric Maldonado, described his uncle as a kindhearted man and a hardworking postal worker who had just retired.

"That’s how Edwin was—kindhearted. If you needed something, he was there to help you," Maldonado said. "But in this case, it cost him his life."

Millet was arraigned on Thursday and charged with second-degree murder and concealment of a human corpse.
