Police have identified a 15-year-old teenager who died in a fatal car accident, as a result of which he fled the scene of the crime when he was being chased by police on Long Island over the weekend, NYPD informs.
Antonio Benitez of Garden City Park was riding an electric bike when he was struck to death on Saturday evening in North New Hyde Park.
Detectives say Benitez was being chased by NYPD officers from Bellerose, Queens, where they said he was a possible suspect in a knife robbery.
Police say he may have been one of the four teenagers who robbed the 14-year-old, who was found with a knife.
"There are only two parts that we are trying to put together to form a true story and understand where everything went wrong, where it all started. We know very little," said his cousin Amanda.
The teenager's relatives are heartbroken and say that Benitez was a wonderful child. They find it hard to believe that he was involved in the robbery, and they want more answers from the police.
According to GoFundMe, Benitez was a student at New Hyde Park Memorial School, and was fond of lacrosse, soccer, and cycling with friends.
According to GoFundMe, Benitez was known for his kindness, sense of humor, and deep love for family and friends.
