A tragic high-speed collision in the Bronx UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS claimed the lives of two individuals and left three others injured when an out-of-control BMW collided with a pole beneath a train station, - ABC News reports.
The aftermath of the incident, witnessed by many in the vicinity of Jerome Avenue and East Fordham Road on a Saturday morning, highlighted the perilous nature of the intersection for both drivers and pedestrians.
Ester, a local resident, recounted being jolted awake by a loud boom, unaware of its source until realizing it was the BMW crashing into a pillar supporting the nearby 4 train tracks. The swift arrival of emergency vehicles underscored the severity of the situation.
Police investigations revealed that the BMW, driven by 23-year-old John Delorbe with 21-year-old Angel Tussan as a passenger, was speeding, disregarded a red light, and collided first with a Nissan Rogue before striking the pillar. Tragically, both Delorbe and Tussan lost their lives, while the three women in the SUV sustained injuries but are in stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital.
The driver of the Nissan Rogue, 36-year-old Jamie Winston, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated (DWI), compounding the gravity of the situation. Ester expressed that such accidents were not uncommon in the area, particularly at that intersection.
