A terrifying sequence of events unfolded in Queens on Sunday. Two men on a moped were driving down 57th Avenue in Elmhurst when a hatchback suddenly barreled into two parked cars and burst into flames, - ABC News7 writes.

The driver of the hatchback, a Volkswagen Golf, struck and killed the moped rider and passenger before fleeing the scene.

A neighbor, who called 911 and watched from her home, reported that the sound of the crash and fire truck sirens woke everyone up.

First responders arrived and transported one moped rider to the hospital, while the other was pronounced dead at the scene.

Firefighters extinguished the flames, and police began searching for the driver who abandoned the silver Volkswagen Golf with Illinois plates. The NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad has the remains of the car and is working to identify the driver.

According to police, the driver failed to negotiate a curve on 57th Avenue, likely due to excessive speed and a wide turn, causing the head-on collision with the moped.

The identities of the moped driver and passenger remain unknown, as the moped was not registered.
