A tragedy occurred on Sunday night in Greenwich Village, just blocks from the Stonewall Inn, as Pride festivities were winding down, ABC News reports.
As a result of the conflict between the two teenage groups, three girls were injured. The NYPD is investigating an incident that occurred near 3 Sheridan Square, home to a Gristedes supermarket, around 10 p.m. Police say shots were fired during a dispute.
According to the preliminary investigation, the argument escalated into violence. An eyewitness filmed a large group of teenagers involved in a fight. The conflict occurred between two warring parties familiar with each other.
The investigation found that a 16-year-old girl, having separated from one of the groups, tried to attack a specific young man. Video footage shows her wading through the crowd, pulling out a gun and firing in close proximity to the target's head.
The bullet did not hit the intended victim, but wounded a 17-year-old girl who turned out to be a bystander. The bullet hit her in the thigh.
"By some miracle that male is not shot, however those rounds traveled down range and strike our 17-year-old victim in her left thigh. That bullet travels through her left thigh and lodges in her right thigh," said NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny. "This victim is a female 17-years-old visiting from New Jersey. She had no connection to the shooter, and she had no connection to the previous fight that was taking place. She was in New York City to celebrate the Pride parade and was a total innocent bystander."
The shooter then flees with her original group of friends.
According to police, another member of this group, running away, opened fire on others, but accidentally wounded in the head a 16-year-old girl standing nearby. The victim was urgently hospitalized in critical condition, but now her condition has stabilized.
Soon after, a 17-year-old girl went to Bellevue Hospital with a stab wound to the stomach. Her condition is also assessed as stable.
The police found that in the video she was in the company of those who shot at the scene, but refuses to cooperate with the investigation. The reasons for her injury and the connection with the incident have not yet been established.
Another suspect, wearing a black ski mask, fled the scene of the crime in the direction of Sheridan Square and is still wanted.
As for the 16-year-old shooter, NYPD says she has two prior arrests for robbery.
No arrests have been made in this shooting, but a gun was recovered at the scene, which is believed to belong to the 16-year-old girl.
Mayor Eric Adams posted a statement on X: “During a time when our city should be rejoicing and celebrating members of our diverse LGBTQ+ community, incidents like this are devastating. We're praying for the speedy recovery of the victims in tonight's shooting. The NYPD will work quickly and tirelessly to bring the suspects to justice".
