A 21-year-old woman, Rachel Lodice from Georgia, is accused of driving drunk and causing a fatal collision in Massapequa, Long Island, on Tuesday night, - ABC 7 New informs.
According to police reports, Lodice was driving a 2023 Kia on Hicksville Road when she collided with a 2022 Nissan Altima traveling on Sunrise Highway at 6:45 p.m. The impact resulted in the death of the 64-year-old Nissan driver, Cynthia Mitchell, who was transported to the hospital where she died from her injuries.
A 46-year-old passenger in the Nissan sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was also taken to the hospital for treatment.
Following the crash, when a public safety officer arrived to assist, Lodice got in his marked town vehicle and drove away. However, she was found a short time later and taken into custody.
Lodice faces multiple charges including vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident, driving while intoxicated, and grand larceny. Prosecutors revealed that Lodice admitted to knowing the risks of mixing alcohol with her medication, yet she reportedly continues to consume vodka, leading to frequent blackouts.
Although Lodice's exact blood alcohol level was not disclosed in court, she was granted bail set at $500,000 bond or $250,000 cash, and her license was suspended pending further legal proceedings.
