A bicyclist was fatally struck by a pickup truck that police had previously tried to pull over in connection with a burglary in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens, ABC News 7 reports.
The cyclist, a 36-year-old woman, was hit by a black truck at the intersection of 37th Street and 34th Avenue around 11:05 p.m. on Tuesday. Surveillance footage captured her approaching the intersection when the speeding truck plowed through, launching her and her bike into the air before they landed on a nearby parked car.
"It happened so quickly," said a witness named Jake, who had been walking his dog nearby. "Just shock...she didn’t even make a sound, she just flew."
The victim was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital.
The three occupants of the truck were wanted in connection with a burglary at a construction site on Crescent Street. Police had attempted to pull them over earlier, but the driver refused to stop. Officers later spotted the truck again after the crash, but it disappeared once more near Steinway Street and Northern Boulevard.
The abandoned truck was eventually found parked on Newtown Road, with its occupants having fled on foot. No arrests have been made.
"A tragedy like this is heartbreaking and infuriating," said Astoria resident Adelaida Tamayo. "My deepest condolences to her family. Situations like these could and should be prevented."
Police are actively investigating. They noted the truck’s license plates were covered with duct tape but had not been reported stolen.
