Police on Long Island have arrested a woman in connection with a hit-and-run crash that resulted in the death of a volunteer firefighter, - ABC 7 News reports.

Maria Guallpa-Bonilla, 36, from Bellport, faces charges related to the hit-and-run incident that killed 22-year-old Christopher Hlavaty, a dedicated volunteer firefighter from the Hagerman Fire Department.

Guallpa-Bonilla has been charged with leaving the scene of an incident involving a fatality. She was detained overnight at the Fourth Precinct and is scheduled for arraignment on Friday morning at First District Court in Central Islip.

Hlavaty, who had served as a volunteer firefighter for two years, was recently honored as "Rookie of the Year" by the Hagerman Fire Department.

A 2019 graduate of Sayville High School, Chris aspired to be a firefighter and EMS professional. He had plans to attend college and was set to join the National Guard next week.

"And now, it's just taken away," Chris's mother lamented. "Taken away in a split second, and anyone who knew him is devastated."

Funeral services for Hlavaty will be held on Saturday at the Hagerman Fire Department headquarters.
