A New Jersey driver with a history of reckless behavior on New York City streets crashed onto a Brooklyn sidewalk on Monday morning. The out-of-control vehicle finally stopped after hitting a bike rack, StreetsBlogNYC reports.
According to one witness, the driver jumped the curb on Kings Highway between E. 17th and 18th streets around 9 a.m. The bike rack bent but did not break, preventing further potential harm.
Both a witness and the NYPD confirmed that no one was seriously injured in the incident.
"Enough is enough!" said Amber Adler, an activist, Council candidate, and member of Families for Safe Streets, who was present at the scene. "If it weren’t for the bike rack outside a local grocer, at least half a dozen people could have been injured or killed this morning. We live in a pedestrian-filled city. We need more bike racks."
Adler also called for the installation of multiple bike racks in sequence to act as a barrier and protect New Yorkers from reckless drivers.
City records indicate that the white Hyundai involved in the crash had been caught 10 times by speed and red-light cameras since October 10, 2023.
