A box truck crashed into a sidewalk shed in Chelsea on Monday morning, leaving three people injured. The incident occurred around 8:17 a.m. on West 29th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues, ABC News7 informs.
According to the FDNY, the truck was pulling out of a parking space when it struck the shed, causing it to collapse and impact an adjoining structure.
Three men were injured in the accident: a 21-year-old and a 20-year-old, both with serious injuries, and a 30-year-old who was critically injured. All three were transported to Bellevue Hospital and are expected to recover.
The truck’s 62-year-old driver remained at the scene and attempted to assist the victims. Authorities say he is devastated by the incident.
The response included 12 FDNY units and 60 personnel. Officials from the Department of Buildings (DOB) stated that the collapsed shed was associated with 231 West 29th Street and had an active permit. While the property owners received an administrative violation requiring repairs to the shed, the DOB confirmed they were in compliance with regulations.
Sidewalk sheds are a common sight across New York City, with nearly 400 miles of them in place, often for extended periods. City Council member Eric Bochner is advocating for new legislation to limit how long these structures can remain.
“There’s no reason why New York City should have so many sidewalk sheds lingering for years. You don’t see this issue in other cities to this extent,” Bochner said. “We’re working to pass a package of legislation to address this problem.”
