Surveillance footage captured a dramatic scene in Brooklyn, where a car speed down a sidewalk, narrowly missing pedestrians after the driver experienced a medical episode, ABC News 7 reports.
The incident occurred at 12:55 p.m. on Monday at East 35th Street and Church Avenue in East Flatbush.
According to police, a 38-year-old man driving a Jeep veered onto the sidewalk, crashing into the entrance of a discount store and smashing through its display items. The vehicle then continued past a furniture store, where the owner described hearing a deafening sound.
"It was like a big thundering noise, like a storm was coming," the store owner recalled.
Video footage shows the Jeep narrowly avoiding two men sitting on a bench. A woman attempting to move out of its path was grazed by the vehicle, which finally collided with the wall of a pharmacy at the corner of East 35th Street.
The furniture store owner also recounted seeing a young man on a scooter being knocked off and landing amidst scattered merchandise.
"He fell over, got scared, and just rode off," the owner said.
Police confirmed the driver suffered a medical episode, leading to the loss of control and the crash into the pharmacy.
Witnesses expressed relief that the sidewalk, typically bustling with activity, was unusually quiet at the time of the incident.
The driver was taken to Kings County Hospital in stable condition and was reported to be conscious and alert. Authorities confirmed that no other injuries were reported.
