A devastated mother is mourning the death of 17-year-old Darrell Harris, who was a victim of violence in the Bronx. An evening brawl involving water pistols in a local park suddenly turned into a shooting tragedy, according to ABC News 7.
"He told me he was going to the park because his friends were having a water gun fight," said Kellie Lewis, the victim's mother.
According to the report, the incident occurred in Starlight Park when Harris. After being repeatedly squirted with water in Starlight Park, Harris turned around and told the suspect to stop. In response, the attacker pulled a real gun, shooting him in the head and right arm, after which he fled the scene of the crime.
Immediately taken to Jacobi Hospital, Harris was pronounced dead.
"He didn't have no problems with nobody. He was a quiet child. He didn't really go outside," the grieving mother said.
At the end of the school year, Harris was preparing to enroll in his final year at the Bronx Leadership Academy.
This is not the first such loss for Ms. Lewis. In 2021, she had already experienced the death of her eldest son, Jamal Hunter, who was also a victim of the Bronx shooting. The perpetrator of Hunter's murder was arrested and given the punishment he deserved.
"I've been through this already with my oldest son ... I have to make sure my other children are well," Lewis told Eyewitness News. "They lost one sibling, now they just lost another one, so it takes a toll on the whole family, and that's what these kids don't realize when they pick up these weapons."
No arrests have been made, nor has a motive been identified.
