Police have arrested a driver accused of hitting a group of pedestrians with a BMW in Queens after fleeing a police stop, ABC News reports.
The incident occurred just before 2 a.m. Sunday, as a group of pedestrians crossed 80th Street near Northern Boulevard in Jackson Heights. Moments after the collision, the driver fled the scene on foot down 80th Street, without stopping to check on the victims.
The chaotic series of events spanned three neighborhoods. It began in Astoria, where police pulled over a white BMW at 31st Avenue and 44th Street for reportedly displaying fraudulent plates.
Shortly after, the same vehicle was stopped again in East Elmhurst. Authorities say the driver attempted to flee and drove erratically, though they emphasized there was no high-speed chase. The collision with the pedestrians occurred shortly thereafter, with police arriving at the scene immediately after the crash.
A 23-year-old man suffered a leg injury, and a 28-year-old woman reported back pain. Both were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
Police apprehended the driver, identified as 32-year-old Fabrice Bayonne of Amityville, at the scene. He was later arrested.
