Officials reported that Jose Barcia, the driver of a Nissan Titan, was placed in handcuffs after fatally striking an 8-year-old boy who was crossing a crosswalk with his brother and mother on Wednesday, March 13th, - Spectrum News NY1 writes.
Barcia now faces charges including criminally negligent homicide, driving at an unsafe speed, failure to exercise due care, and failure to yield to pedestrians, according to authorities.
Data indicates that as of Wednesday this year, 23 pedestrians have been killed, marking a concerning trend. Last year concluded with 101 pedestrian fatalities, the lowest in a decade, with 184 pedestrian deaths recorded in 2013. One aspect of street safety that has been in decline — the NYPD enforcing the rules of the road, especially as vehicle traffic has largely returned to pre-pandemic levels
