An 88-year-old woman suffered critical injuries in an apartment fire in Washington Heights, ABC News 7 reports.

Firefighters rescued her from her fifth-floor apartment on Bennett Avenue shortly after 12:15 a.m.

She was transported to New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia for treatment.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
