As New York City's new congestion pricing plan is set to begin in a few weeks, a federal judge will soon hear arguments over this controversial initiative, - ABC7 News 7.
At least four lawsuits have been filed in New York, challenging the tolling program. These legal actions represent a final effort to halt the plan, which is scheduled to take effect on June 30.
The plaintiffs include New Yorkers Against Congestion Pricing Tax, UFT President Michael Mulgrew, Staten Island President Vito Fossella, and a group of city residents.
The congestion pricing plan will impose a $15 toll on drivers entering Manhattan south of 60th Street. Critics argue that this tolling program will shift traffic and pollution to minority neighborhoods and harm small businesses. They demand a more thorough environmental assessment, claiming that the one approved by the MTA and the Federal Highway Administration last year was insufficient.
The judge is expected to rule on the case early next month.
