Three firefighters were injured, two seriously, while battling a blaze in the Clason Point section of the Bronx on Friday afternoon, - ABC7News reports.
The fire erupted at around 3 p.m. on White Plains Road, rapidly engulfing the home. Thick black smoke billowed from the building.
Long after nightfall, fire marshals were examining the charred remains of the house, which had been nearly fatal for one of their own.
As firefighters moved through the dense smoke, the one operating the nozzle suddenly struggled to breathe and collapsed after inhaling a potentially lethal amount of smoke.
His fellow firefighters quickly pulled him to safety, but he had stopped breathing. Paramedics administered hydroxocobalamin, a drug that counteracts cyanide poisoning, reviving him.
As investigators work to determine the cause of the fire, they are also trying to understand how the firefighter, despite being fully equipped with an oxygen tank and mask, was overcome by the smoke.
