Fifty people were left homeless after a fire broke out in Passaic on Sunday night, ABC 7 News informs.
Firefighters rescued four residents from a burning home on High Street around 9 p.m. as heavy flames engulfed the two-story building.
Neighbors knocked on doors in a concerted effort to ensure everyone was accounted for.
One passerby, James Czerwinski, saw the smoke and sprang into action. "I ran inside the building, started banging on the doors saying 'fire, fuego.' I went all the way upstairs trying to get as many people out as I possibly could. By the time I did that, firefighters had arrived," he said.
Three firefighters sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
Sadly, a resident's dog died from smoke inhalation.
One family, who lost everything in the fire, has set up a GoFundMe to seek help for clothing and necessities for their children, ages 2, 3, and 11.
Investigators are still determining the cause of the fire.
