Good Samaritans Rescue Mother and Son Pinned Under Taxi in Christmas Day Herald Square Crash
A group of good Samaritans jumped into action as Christmas night chaos unfolded in front of them when a taxi plowed into multiple pedestrians in Herald Square. A 41-year-old mother and her 9-year-old son from Australia were pinned under the vehicle, among the six people injured during the incident in Midtown, ABC News 7 writes.
The crash occurred just after 4 p.m. at the busy intersection of West 34th Street and Sixth Avenue. According to the NYPD, the 58-year-old cab driver experienced a medical emergency, reportedly related to high blood pressure, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and mount the sidewalk.
"He hit us from behind. I didn’t even know what had happened," recalled the 41-year-old mother. "I just remember being on the ground, something on top of me, hearing the wheels screeching, and my son screaming next to me."
Ryan Tucker, a tourist from Oregon, witnessed the aftermath. His wife was grazed by the taxi but unharmed. Tucker quickly joined other bystanders to assist the trapped victims.
"I saw the little boy’s leg pinned under the front passenger tire as it was spinning," Tucker said. "One person shut off the car, and a group of us pulled the fender off and lifted the vehicle. I grabbed the boy and brought him to safety, then realized his mom was still trapped underneath."
The mother, who spoke to reporters from her hospital bed, said her son underwent his second surgery on Thursday.
"He broke his right femur and has severe burns on his leg," she shared. "He’ll be in the hospital for quite some time. We were just here for Christmas and New Year’s. Day three in the city, and this happened."
The family’s holiday plans have now shifted to New York Presbyterian Hospital, where they are recovering.
In addition to the mother and son, a 49-year-old woman was transported to another hospital for treatment. Three other women, ages 19, 37, and 49, declined medical attention at the scene. All injuries were reported as non-life-threatening.
The taxi driver was also taken to a local hospital and is expected to recover. Authorities confirmed that no criminality is suspected in the incident.
