A 9-year-old boy has died after his mother, suspected of driving under the influence, crashed in a head-on collision on the Southern State Parkway, ABC News informs.

The incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Thursday in the eastbound lanes near exit 42.

Police report that 32-year-old Kerri Bedrick was fleeing from an attempted traffic stop by a Suffolk County deputy sheriff.

The deputy sheriff had spotted Bedrick's vehicle going the wrong way—westbound in the eastbound lanes—and attempted to pull her over. When she failed to stop, the deputy, concerned for safety, stopped pursuing directly and switched to the westbound lanes to follow her in the correct flow of traffic.

When the deputy was able to return to the eastbound lanes, he encountered a four-car crash at exit 42.

The 9-year-old victim, later identified as Eli Henrys, was found in the back seat of Bedrick's vehicle. It is believed he was wearing a seat belt. First responders performed CPR and used an automated external defibrillator in an effort to save his life.

Bedrick, a resident of Centerport, was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in West Islip with non-life-threatening injuries. She underwent field sobriety tests after the crash and faces several charges, including aggravated unlicensed operation, operating a motor vehicle while impaired by drugs, aggravated DWI with a passenger under 16, endangering the welfare of a child, and criminal possession of a stimulant.

The occupants of the other three vehicles involved were taken to South Side Hospital and Good Samaritan Hospital, and their injuries appear to be non-life-threatening.

The collision's impact was so severe that it separated the engine from the wrong-way vehicle and hurled it into oncoming traffic.

The Suffolk County District Attorney's Office and the New York State Attorney General's Office are investigating the crash.
