Arson is suspected in a Brooklyn apartment fire that injured nine people early Tuesday morning, according to the NYPD, PIX 11 New York 1 informs.
The fire erupted on Evergreen Avenue in Bushwick around 2:50 a.m., starting on the first floor, as reported by the FDNY.
Witnesses told police that a man in his 60s was seen igniting the fire with an unknown substance inside the building.
Fire officials stated that at least 17 people, including nine children, were inside the building when the fire began. Authorities confirmed that nine people suffered from smoke inhalation.
The FDNY extinguished the fire around 3:30 a.m. The suspect fled the scene in an unknown direction, according to police.
