FDNY marshals suspect that a fire in Brooklyn, which resulted in one fatality, may have been deliberately set, - ABC News 7 reports.
Police arrived at 371 Monroe St. around 11:15 p.m. on Friday after receiving reports of smoke coming from an apartment. According to officials, the fire originated in a first-floor apartment unit. Firefighters responded promptly to extinguish the blaze.
Upon entering the apartment, officers discovered a 70-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive in his bedroom. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 65-year-old woman was transported to Woodhull Medical Center for smoke inhalation and is currently in stable condition.
"I smelled the smoke, and then my son ran to everyone's door, banging on it to warn us to get out," a neighbor recounted. "We all ran out."
One person is in custody in connection with the incident as the investigation continues.
