Police are investigating after a 51-year-old man was struck and killed by a vehicle in East Harlem on Monday afternoon, ABC 7 News informs.
According to police, a driver who 'failed to navigate the road' struck two men as they were crossing the street. One of the men, aged 51, was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem in critical condition. The other, also 51 years old, was transported to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver remained at the scene and was taken to NYC Health + Hospitals/Metropolitan, where he is expected to survive.
An eyewitness named Gloria recounted the incident, saying, "I was sitting in my living room and all of a sudden I heard a big bang. It was so hard. And when I came over to the window, all I could see is people trying to get him out and they laid him on the ground."
Surveillance video shows a woman pushing a shopping cart, pausing before crossing First Avenue. A white sedan then mounts the curb, crashes into the cart, and subsequently hits a parked car, which then strikes the two men.
Neighbors who knew the deceased victim said he had lived in the area his whole life. One neighbor shared, "We did homework together. He came a long way. There were issues, but he changed and tried to do the right thing. He was a nice guy, always made you laugh."
Another neighbor added, "I was very sick with cancer, and he used to make me laugh. He would invite me to come and visit, sit down, and watch TV with him."
The second man struck in the incident remains in critical condition.
