Police officers fatally shot a pit bull that was attacking its owner inside a Bronx apartment early Friday morning, - Eyewitness news ABC7 reports.
The 41-year-old man was being mauled in his apartment on Simpson Street just before 3:10 a.m.
Gilbert Durecout, a resident of the building, said, "There was a girl in the apartment and she was yelling that he was unconscious and then was like oh, call 911, look he's unconscious, he can't get up. And that's when the cops finally came and they got into the apartment."
Two officers who responded to the scene shot the dog, named Max, to halt the attack. They reported that Max was biting his owner's leg and neck. The victim was pronounced dead at St. Barnabas Hospital.
The officers received treatment for tinnitus. The incident remains under investigation.
