Police have arrested a bus driver following a collision with a car in North Bellport, according to Suffolk authorities, - Eyewitness news ABC 7 says.
The driver, identified as 64-year-old Steven Edwards, was transporting five children aged between 10 and 14 along with an aide to Victory Station Academy. The incident occurred at 7:50 a.m. at the intersection of Bellport Avenue and Head of the Neck Road on February 28.
Despite significant damage to the bus's front end, Suffolk County police reported that everyone, including the aide, sustained no serious injuries and was taken to local hospitals. However, Edwards resisted allowing medical personnel to assess the children onboard and engaged in a confrontation with law enforcement officers at the scene.
Gregory Miglino from the Department of South Country Ambulance stated, "When we encountered the hostile situation, our priority was to verbally defuse it to ensure the well-being of the children and the bus driver."
Edwards was subsequently arrested and charged with five counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, as well as two counts of Obstruction of Governmental Administration, Harassment, and Resisting Arrest.
Efforts to reach Edwards for comment were unsuccessful, and his emotional state at the time of the incident remains unclear. He was issued a desk appearance ticket.
