A 56-year-old man has died after a hit-and-run crash in Queens, and police are currently searching for two women who fled the scene, ABC News 7 reports.
The incident occurred just before 12:30 a.m. on Tuesday when David Opiela was struck after two vehicles collided at the intersection of Kissena Boulevard and Horace Harding Expressway.
According to officials, a southbound Honda Accord on Kissena Boulevard collided with a U-Haul truck traveling westbound on Horace Harding Expressway.
Surveillance footage from the scene suggests that the U-Haul truck may have run a red light, as another car beside it stopped while the truck continued through the intersection.
Following the collision, both vehicles jumped the curb, and Opiela, who appeared to be crossing the street at the time, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The 42-year-old driver of the Honda Accord is currently recovering at New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital.
The driver and front passenger of the U-Haul, both described as women, fled westbound on Kissena Boulevard, reportedly barefoot.
Authorities have confirmed that the U-Haul truck was not stolen, and they are actively working to identify the two women.
Friends and loved ones of Opiela are devastated by his loss. "Good man, soft-spoken, didn't rob, steal, didn't hurt anyone...just minding his own business going home" said his close friend, Michael Abbate.
An ex-girlfriend of 30 years mentioned that Opiela had faced many challenges in life, including the loss of several family members, including his twin sister, in a house fire years ago.
Despite his hardships, Opiela was known for keeping his head down and doing his best to overcome his struggles.
Now, his loved ones are seeking justice as police continue to investigate and search for the suspects.
