Authorities are investigating a fatal hit-and-run in Longwood, the Bronx, involving a stolen Ford van that struck and killed 56-year-old AlHadji Fofana while he was crossing the street on Wednesday, Channel 12 The Bronx informs.
Police report that the driver attempted to set the vehicle on fire before fleeing the scene on foot. The stolen van, along with its license plate, had already been reported stolen prior to the incident.
Community members have voiced concerns about the dangerous intersection where the crash occurred, citing issues with speeding vehicles and confusing traffic patterns. Alexa Sledge of Transportation Alternatives described the intersection as "a crash waiting to happen."
Police provided an update on Friday stating that the driver tried to abandon the vehicle and set it on fire before fleeing the scene. Both the vehicle and its license plate had been reported stolen prior to the incident.
Police are still searching for the suspect and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
