Nine people were injured when a fire broke out at a row of homes in Brooklyn, including six firefighters who were working to extinguish the flames, ABC News 7 informs.

The fire occurred just after 10:30 p.m. on Monday at 2411 Dean St. in the Ocean Hill section of Brooklyn. The damage is extensive, with the fire reducing several homes to shambles and leaving more than 30 people displaced.

The FDNY reported that the roof of the first building to catch fire collapsed into the top floor, making it difficult to contain the blaze. According to a neighbor, the fire was relentless, spreading from one house to another.

"It was like an inferno, everything was fire. Flames were coming out, and then the fire kept moving from one house to the next," Federico Pagan told Eyewitness News. "The firefighters were battling the flames in one house, but the fire kept spreading to the next, so they had to keep moving back and forth."

The fire spread through the cocklofts to four other homes on Dean Street. One woman who lost everything in the fire recounted how she had only stepped out for a few minutes before returning to chaos.

"I was worried because there was an older man on the second floor. We’re just happy he was able to get out, along with a few other elderly residents," said Hope Hatcher, a fire victim. "But now, everyone’s lives are completely upended."

Witnesses reported that one person jumped out of the building to escape the flames. Overhead drone images captured by the FDNY showed crews working for hours to bring the fire under control. It took three hours to fully extinguish the flames.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing. Residents of the building where the fire started say nothing inside is salvageable.

Officials reported that the roofs of all five affected buildings partially collapsed, leading the Department of Buildings to issue a full vacate order. Property owners will be required to install a fence around the damaged buildings.

In the meantime, the Red Cross NY disaster team responded to the fire, providing emergency housing and financial assistance to 10 families.
