The Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has confirmed that several buildings involved in the massive Bushwick fire earlier this month contain asbestos. According to NYC.gov, inhaling asbestos fibers poses significant health risks, including lung cancer, digestive tract cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis, as reported by News 12 Brooklyn.
The fire, which began at Christa’s Kitchen, displaced dozens of residents.
One tenant informed News 12 that they may have been exposed to asbestos during the incident. They provided a photo showing an asbestos tent set up outside 63 Cooper Street the night after the May 1 fire. The DEP has confirmed asbestos was found on the roof of this building but has not specified how many other buildings are affected.
A neighbor of 63 Cooper Street expressed concerns about potential asbestos exposure.
