Police report that just before 1 p.m. on Monday, September 23, a 64-year-old man was crossing Bronxwood Avenue when he was struck by a tow truck that then fled the scene, Channel 12 the Bronx informs.
Surveillance footage has been released showing the moments leading up to the fatal incident involving the tow truck in Wakefield. The victim has been identified as S.M. Akhtaruzzaman, and his family is calling for justice.
Witnesses say the tow truck driver hit Akhtaruzzaman while making a turn onto Bronxwood Avenue and continued driving without stopping. "We heard the impact; it sounded like two cars colliding. When we looked in the mirror, we saw the man lying on the ground, and the tow truck driving away," one witness recalled. "He passed our vehicle, and we knew he wasn't going to stop."
The video shows the truck approaching a red light and then running through it moments later. Akhtaruzzaman was taken to Jacobi Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. One witness followed the black tow truck until the driver jumped out and fled on foot.
Akhtaruzzaman’s youngest daughter is demanding justice and urging authorities to apprehend the driver.
