A volunteer firefighter in Suffolk County, Jonathan Quiles, was arrested for allegedly setting a brush fire in Medford, according to police, ABC Nws7 informs.
Authorities report that Quiles intentionally started a fire in a wooded area along Mount Vernon Avenue, which caused damage to a nearby parked 2004 Chevrolet.
The fire spread through part of Twelve Pines Park on Tuesday afternoon, with firefighters returning Wednesday morning to extinguish remaining hot spots. This was one of several brush fires reported in Suffolk County on Wednesday.
Quiles faces charges of arson and reckless endangerment.
The Medford Fire Department stated that they conduct arson background checks on members and had no indication that Quiles would pose a risk of setting fires. He has been suspended, and if convicted, he will be terminated.
The Suffolk County PD Arson Squad is actively investigating the incident. Quiles is scheduled for arraignment in Central Islip later today.
