A tragic incident unfolded early Tuesday morning in the Bronx, claiming the life of a 38-year-old woman in a fire, - ABC7 News writes.
According to officials, the blaze ignited at a residence on 212th Street around 2 a.m. The intensity of the flames was such that they erupted from the roof, causing windows to shatter. As investigators sift through the charred remnants of the home, the search for the fire's origin is underway.
The sudden outbreak of the fire prompted neighbors to spring into action, fearing its rapid spread. One resident expressed, "It was very scary, I've never witnessed anything like this before. We were all prepared to evacuate, but the firefighters did an exceptional job containing the blaze."
Surveillance footage captured the desperate attempts of young men, believed to be the victim's nephews and their acquaintances, as they frantically knocked on her door in a bid to alert her and gain entry, albeit unsuccessfully.
Neighbors lamented the tragic circumstances, revealing that the deceased woman had been residing in the house since her mother's demise six years ago. Struggling with grief, she found it challenging to manage the household expenses.
"The mother died and they left the house to the daughter and the nephews and them live downstairs," a neighbor said. "They were just living in there. No water, no heat, no electricity."
Approximately 60 fire and EMS personnel collaborated to extinguish the flames, while fire marshals diligently endeavored to ascertain the fire's cause throughout the morning. The Department of Buildings officials are slated to assess the structural integrity of the building.
At least three people have been displaced.
