A motorist was killed early Sunday when a wrong-way driver crashed into his car on the Hutchinson River Parkway in Westchester County, setting the victim's vehicle ablaze, police said, NY Post.
Westchester County police received several 911 calls around 5:08 a.m. reporting a car traveling southbound in the northbound lanes that collided with another vehicle about half a mile south of King Street in the village of Rye Brook.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers found one of the cars "fully engulfed in flames." The driver of that vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and has not yet been identified.
The wrong-way driver was pulled from his car and transported by ambulance to Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, where he is currently being treated. Details on the severity of his injuries were not immediately available.
Patrol officers, the Accident Investigation Team, and detectives from WCPD’s General Investigations Unit are investigating the cause of the crash, the department said in a Facebook post late Sunday morning.
As of noon, traffic was still being diverted off the northbound Hutchinson River Parkway at the Ridge Street exit, and one lane on the southbound side remains closed due to the ongoing investigation.
Westchester County Police said no further information on the crash is expected until Monday.
This fatal incident is one of several recent wrong-way crashes in the New York metro area.
